Hints and Tips - Project Management (Level 2)
- Consider risk as an ongoing activity…
- Whilst it is tempting to then get on with running the project this will be difficult if new risks are left undetected or unchecked. The risk log is therefore a document that should be regularly reviewed and updated throughout the project.
- Avoid splitting a task between two, or more, people
- If co-workers fail to communicate properly or disagree on key issues this could lead to either a duplication of effort or work being left undone. If splitting a task cannot be avoided then clear communication procedures should be agreed upon.
- Keep an eye on the 3 key project drivers…
- Every project should be planned and monitored against 3 key drivers – time, cost and specification. Define these precisely before you start, get everyone involved to agree to them and then monitor them when the project is running.
- Hold project closure meetings…
- Every project should have a clearly defined end point. Once this is reached it is important to assess if the outputs have been delivered on time, budget and to the required specification.
- Re-evaluate all your tasks…
- If a task has a well-defined start, middle and end, and if it has a clear outcome that is designed to make a positive difference, then it’s probably a project and would benefit from the application of project management principles.
