Hints and Tips - Microsoft Excel (3 Levels)
- Quickly apply the currency format…
- select the relevant cells
- press CTRL + SHIFT + $
- Reset the numeric format…
- select the relevant cells
- press CTRL + SHIFT + ~
- Select all cells in the current worksheet…
- Select the current ‘region’, (block of contiguous cells)…
- click anywhere in the region of interest
- press CTRL + ? (note this must be the asterisk on the numeric keypad at the far right of the keyboard)
- Quickly fill a range…
- select the relevant range of cells
- enter the data you want to use to fill the range, (but don’t press RETURN yet)
- press CTRL + RETURN instead
- Enter a bullet character into a cell…
- hold down the ALT key and, at the same time, type 0149 on the numeric keypad, (you might need to check that Num Lock is on for this to work)
- let go of ALT
- Enter a line break in a cell…
- ensure the height of the row is increased before you start
- enter the first line of text
- press ALT + RETURN to go to the next line etc
- Quickly insert the date in a cell…
- Enter a number as a label, (e.g. telephone number or product code)…
- precede the value with a single quote ‘
- Note – this does not prevent the ‘number’ being used in a formula!
- Copy and paste without the borders…
- select the source cells, (which have borders)
- press CTRL + C to copy them to the clipboard
- select the destination range
- select the Edit menu and Paste Special
- select the option to paste ‘All except borders’
- Select two (or more) ranges...
- Select the first range then...
- Hold down Ctrl whilst selecting subsequent ranges
- Apply Strikethrough format...
- Press Ctrl + 5 NB: strikethrough is very useful for indicating a superceded or incorrect value that you still want to be visible.
